About this blog

Ever been in on the inside track of a book getting written? This blog is exactly that!

In 2011 I began working on a book to be titled The Cabins of Wilsonia. The book is now completed (as of December 2014). It consists of pencil drawings of the cabins and quotations by cabin folks. It isn’t a history book – that has been done several times. Besides, I am an artist, not a historian.

I post to this site about once a week now. The older posts show completed drawings, updates about the book’s progress, drawings in progress, commissions, thoughts on building a book from scratch, and a peek into the life, studio and mind of an artist. The newer posts tell about selling the book, because that is its own set of challenges and stories.

Who is this cabin-drawing artist? I am Jana Botkin, Three Rivers artist, and with my husband Michael, owner of a cabin in Mineral King. We love our cats (currently have 2 youngsters named Tucker and Scout – life is rough on cats in Three Rivers), hiking, and dark chocolate. When I am not working, you will often find me with yarn and knitting needles in hand, gardening, or with my nose in a book.

For more years than I want to calculate, I’ve been drawing in pencil. Details and accuracy are my signature look. Architecture is my favorite subject, along with Mineral King, Sequoia National Park scenes and agriculture (particularly citrus). I’ve drawn many commissions of various subjects, mostly homes and cabins. In fact, that is how I discovered the cabins of Wilsonia. (Thank you, Gus!)

The name of my home-based art business is “Cabinart“, and you are welcome to contact me and visit my studio by appointment. I post regularly on another blog at www.janabotkin.net. For a comprehensive list of what I do, go here. The homepage of my website is www.cabinart.net.
